Biography

Kathryn Carlberg began her dance training at age 5 from Sharon Boswell of Boswell Dance Academy in New Westminster, British Columbia, Canada. She extensively studied classical ballet, jazz, lyrical, and hip hop. Over the span of 12 years Kathryn excelled at completing all Royal Academy of Dance graded and vocational ballet examinations including Primary-Grade 8 and Elementary- Advanced 2. In addition, Kathryn also received training from the Goh Ballet and Danzmode Productions under the direction by Rachel Poirier.
Kathryn then studied dance at The School for Contemporary Arts at Simon Fraser University in British Columbia, Canada. She received training from Judith Garay (Graham Technique), Cheryl Prophet, Rob Kitsos, Day Hellisc, Megan Walker-Straight (Cunningham Technique), Marla Eist, Mary Lousie-Albert, Catherine Labelle, Henry Daniels, and Kyja Pepper. She performed original works created by Joe Laughlin (Joe Inc.) and Serge Bennathan (Les Productions Figlio) in repertoire classes. After six years of university Kathryn graduated in 2012 with a double major; receiving a BFA in contemporary dance and a BBA in business marketing from The Beedie School of Business.
During her studies at SFU, Kathryn participated in the 2009 Ghana Field School program. Under the direction of professor Albert Smith, Kathryn along with thirteen other students traveled throughout the many diverse regions of Ghana to study traditional West African dance, music, art and culture.
In 2010 she performed at the Opening Ceremonies of the Vancouver Winter Olympics.
In 2012 and 2013 Kathryn participated in Project CPR (Choreographic Practice and Research) established by Claire French. Kathryn danced in the creative works of Salome Diaz, Jennifer McLeish-Lewis, and Patricia Kim in 2012 and Philippa Myler, and Lisa Hostman in 2013. Kathryn went on to perform Jennifer McLeish-Lewis’ Soft Animal in Nanaimo, B.C. as part of Leaving Traces: New Dance Works, and as a solo performance at the Tremors Performing Arts festival and A Dime a Dozen showcase. Kathryn also worked as an understudy for Judith Garay's company Dancers Dancing in 2013 and 2014; she performed in the premier of 20.20.20 in September 2014.
Kathryn is currently working towards her Certificate in Ballet Teaching (CBTS) from the RAD. In 2013 she received the Dorothy Cox-Scruton Bursary from RAD Canada for demonstrating a passion in teaching and dancing, as well as a wider interests in the arts. Teaching is rewarding for Kathryn. She teaches both recreational and competitive dance to students of all ages. She also volunteers at the Canadian Alliance of Dance Artists (CADA West) attending to administrative duties.
